A New Generation of Design
Youthful + Sophisticated
When these young homeowners decided to make the move from New York City to the New Jersey suburbs, they found the perfect hometown neighborhood with easy train access to the city for daily commutes.
And while they loved the home and neighborhood they chose, they weren’t quite sure how to transition their taste, existing furniture and occasionally differing visions into their new space. Knowing that a design professional could help them work through all of this, they reached out to KPID.
Initially tackling the first floor, the design ended up encompassing most of the home including the living room, powder room, guest room, dining room, primary suite and office.
This young couple envisioned something unique with unexpected details but that still felt very much like them. Subtle Hamptons-inspired coastal elements were combined with more masculine design touches for a clean, contemporary vibe.
While the main home was older, an extensive addition had recently been built on, so we wanted to make sure the spaces were coherent and fused together well. Varying ceiling heights posed a challenge that we solved by painting the ceiling and walls the same color in rooms with lower ceilings and using contrasting grasscloth wallpaper in rooms with vaulted ceilings to help ground the spaces. The “red thread” throughout the open concept home was varying shades of blue, tying each space together while also delineating each room’s purpose and personality.
In the living room, a monochromatic approach is grounded by a custom geometric rug, with touches of creams and blues in the upholstery piping, accent pillows, window treatments and artwork. Slipper settees were designed for easy slide-in seating while tufted armchairs provide a more permanent resting spot for enjoying the view through the picture window.
In the family room, a long-awaited sectional was upholstered in a durable blue/gray tweedy fabric and is adorned with punchier, brighter colors that tie into the window coverings and coordinate with the deeper blues of the adjacent dining room. A custom console table was designed to the exact height of the sofa and wrapped in durable vinyl grasscloth. Bright, graphic artwork keeps the space fun and lighthearted.
Adjacent to the family room, the dining room embraces a bit of midcentury modernism with a burlwood Parson style dining room table and custom designed large hex rug.
Dark navy grasscloth walls contrast against the bright white chippendale chairs upholstered with geometric indoor/outdoor fabric for ultimate durability.
The guest bedroom gives the biggest nod to coastal chic with a sandy-hued wave headboard trimmed in coral piping, flanked with fun orange lamps against hydrangea blue walls. Ikat patterned window treatments and chinoiserie-inspired art add a bit of global style.
The home office is all about texture.
Dark taupe grasscloth walls envelop the space and tone down the various angles of the walls and ceilings. A rattan bookshelf, colorful artwork, and a menswear inspired window dressing add visual interest with a tailored finish.
Over in the powder room it’s all about pattern. Bold wallpaper is adorned with a custom lacquered mirror and a fun bird print for contrast.
Finally, the primary suite features more serene and soothing grays and blues with a custom designed upholstered headboard in a frette pattern and cornflower blue edging. Classic blue plaid details embrace the more masculine influences and bring a punch of pattern and color.
In the bathroom, cheeky artwork and a bubble bath-inspired chandelier create a sophisticated yet fun place to relax.
Having a home that feels like it embodies their personal aesthetic has helped this young couple settle into their new home, town and state while still feeling connected to the dynamic city lifestyle they love.
